The production of mountain products and crops is exceptional, with sheep and goat cheeses reaching high levels.
Wine production, led by the Atina Cabernet and supported by numerous noble grape varieties is now recognised nationally and internationally.
Although still little known, the truffles harvested in the highlands are of high quality and are largely exported. Cooking with truffles is very varied, from their use as a condiment for fresh pasta to sauces for flavouring crostini and dishes and desserts.
A unique speciality in Lazio is the almond paste torroncini, available in many varieties.
Fruit of a food industry with ancient traditions, the nougat of the Comino Valley (in particular of Alvito) are a delicacy not to be missed.
Taste local products, from the Atina cannellini bean to native trout
Various specialities are cultivated in the countryside, including the cannellini bean of Atina PDO, with a rare savouriness and mellow texture.
The typical Val di Comino dish is a bean soup with fresh pasta cut into large pieces known as “sagne e fagioli”.
The presence of the rivers and Lake Posta Fibreno influences the cuisine, which is based on freshwater fish. The presence of a variety of high quality native trout (the macrostigma) has allowed the development of a veritable culinary school based on fish dishes. It is therefore possible to enjoy trout cooked in a variety of ways, as well as first courses seasoned with sauces made from excellent quality aquatic fauna.
Immerse yourself in unspoilt nature
La Comino Valley between Abruzzo and Molise, a base for outdoor activities and a destination for lovers of lesser-known places. The Campoli Appennino truffle, both black and white, is a precious product of this land. A visit to the Marsican Bear Museum is recommended. Broccostella, at the entrance to the valley, offers sport fishing and horse riding. Continuing along the Vandra state road, the Napoleonic cemetery of Fontechiari is interesting to visit. The Posta Fibreno oasis has a spring lake with fish species including a prized macrostigma trout with an exquisite taste. The lake's curiosity is a floating island that moves daily due to wind and currents. The castles of Vicalvi and Alvito protect the valley.
La Comino Valley is a perfect destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities and also offers many options for fans of history and little-known monuments.
We recommend a visit to the historical centre of Alvito, where you can admire the Ducal Palace and churches and taste the famous handmade nougats.
The historical centres of San Donato e Picinisco offer breathtaking views and the opportunity to explore the forests and trails of the Abruzzo National Park.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Canneto (Settefrati) immersed in the PNALM attracts pilgrims from many parts of Italy.
Atina is known for its International Folklore Festival and the Atina Jazz Festival, which attract music fans from all over the world in the summer.
Outdoor activities
The Valle di Comino is well equipped for outdoor activities such as hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. There are numerous trails such as those near Forca d'Acero, in the Valle di Canneto and Prati di Mezzo. The area offers the opportunity to explore the Melfa Gorge, the Meta Mountains, Mount Cairo with the monumental chestnut grove of Terelle.
The Comino Valley offers many opportunities for outdoor sports enthusiasts, such as cycle hiking in Forca d'Acero.
Winter sports such as downhill skiing and ski touring can be practised at Prati di Mezzo and Forca d'Acero. For rock climbing, one must go to Picinisco or the Melfa Gorges.
Lake Posta Fibreno attracts divers for scuba diving or free diving. The valley is also an ideal area for paragliding and hang-gliding.
Other activities include birdwatching and outdoor picnics, as well as local handicrafts such as pottery, wickerwork, wrought iron, copper and bagpipes.
The agritourism is thriving and well organised, offering genuine flavours of the countryside such as Fibreno trout, olives, cheeses such as the delicious Picinisco pecorino cheese, honey, cannellini beans and Cabernet di Atina.
