With the arrival of summer, Picinisco is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors, tourists and emigrants who, as per tradition, come to the thousand-year-old Mainarde village. This year's programme is full of cultural, historical, landscape, gastronomic, social and sporting initiatives, designed to make people rediscover the immense environmental, enogastronomic and pastoral heritage that makes Picinisco the pearl of the Comino Valley.

Picinisco Summer Events

The “Pastorizia in Festival” Association, in cooperation with the municipal administration and the support of numerous volunteers from the various local associations, is at the heart of the annual programme. The eagerly awaited summer event on 6 and 7 July, followed by the autumn appendix “Pastorizia in Festival Winter Edition” on 19 and 20 October, is preceded this year by a special event as early as Sunday 30 June: 'On the Shepherd's Steps'.

On the Shepherd's Steps

Sunday 30 June, the series of events “On the Shepherd's Steps” will open the season with a central theme: “The role of breeders for the conservation of grassland habitats in the Natura 2000 areas of the Lazio side of the PNALM”. This ambitious project aims to safeguard and valorise local sheep farming and the prized Pecorino DOP cheese of Picinisco, supported by the Lazio Region, Arsial, Project Life 19, Natura 2000, La Sapienza University Department of Biology and Environment, FIRAB, Areen Factor and Comunità Ambiente.

A Mix of Tradition and Innovation

The project skilfully blends the millenary local pastoral tradition, the protection and preservation of the uniqueness of its natural habitat, the tasting of characteristic native food and wine products, folk tales and songs, and contact with nature. The extraordinary participation of musician and ethnomusicologist Ambrogio Sparagna will further enrich the experience with his unique performances.

The Words of the Mayor and the President of the Association

Mayor Marco Scappaticci emphasised the importance of the pastoral tradition: “The environment, nature and millenary pastoralism are not only our roots and our historical and social heritage, but also the only resource to make our village grow and safeguard it from the demographic decline that characterises mountain municipalities. Our commitment is focused on environmental conservation and on the valorisation of our sectors of excellence such as food and wine, tourist accommodation and the excellent products of sheep farming, starting with the prized Pecorino DOP cheese of Picinisco”.

The president of the Pastorizia in Festival Association, Antonio Mancini, added: “Once again this year we can welcome the thousands of tourists and visitors with a programme full of attractions and entertainment, thanks to the many volunteers from the various associations who turn their love for Picinisco into social commitment.
