Casalattico, Church of San Barbato

The majestic parish church of Casalattico is dedicated to St Barbato, Bishop of Benevento and Patron of the town. He contributed, in the 7th century, to the conversion of the Lombards by fighting their pagan cults and superstitions linked to the worship of idols, trees and animals such as the viper.

The church dates back to the first centuries of the second millennium, but was not officially mentioned until 1305, when it was already dedicated to the bishop. However, the building, as it stands today, was almost entirely rebuilt in 1517, as can be seen from an epigraph on the bell tower, which was built on the right side of the salient façade, re-using an ancient watchtower from the medieval village. The church was extensively restored and renovated during the 17th and 18th centuries following major seismic events well documented in our Valley. The building has three naves and a transept towards the east: the central nave is barrel-vaulted while the side naves have cross vaults. Immediately after the entrance, at the top, is the cantorìa which houses a valuable organ by Catarinozzi, dated 1695. The statue of St Barbato is by L. Coriniis, dated 1712. It is solemnly carried in procession through the streets of the town on 19 February each year, on the occasion of the patron saint's day. The interior of the church is adorned with a statue of the Immaculate Conception from 1703 and several oil paintings, including the Assumption and Purgatory from the 16th century.
