Church of St. Mary

La Church of St. Mary stands outside the historic core of Picinisco, near the municipal cemetery in the Val di Comino region. It is the oldest church in the village and enjoys a strong connection with the local community. Finds of Roman votive offerings have been discovered near the area, suggesting that the site may have been considered sacred even before the Christian era. According to scholar and archaeologist Marco Germani, it is plausible that the church was built on an earlier necropolis, which would explain its association with the cemetery. It is also believed to be decorated with valuable frescoes, both inside and outside, although these are currently walled up and require rediscovery. This place of worship presents a very refined Romanesque style, with a beautiful stone walkway and portico preceding the entrance, and a three-nave interior with a wooden trussed ceiling.
