Church of San Giacomo a Sorelle: History and Legends in the Heart of Casalvieri

In the picturesque landscape of the Comino Valley, among the alleys and heights of the province of Frosinone, lies the hamlet of Sisters, belonging to the municipality of Casalvieri. Here, faith and local history are inextricably intertwined around the Church of St James the Apostle, an 18th century architectural jewel that holds the very origin of the place's name.

Eighteenth-Century Architecture: The Link with the Jubilee

The Church of San Giacomo is a significant example of late 18th-century religious building in the area. Looking carefully at the lintel of the entrance portal, it is possible to discern a detail that is fundamental for dating the site: the year 1775.

This date is not accidental. A Latin inscription informs us that the building was consecrated on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1775, by Pope Pius VI. The structure has sober and elegant lines, typical of rural churches that served as a hub for the agricultural communities of southern Latium.

The Legend of the “Sisters” and the Paolini Family

The name of the hamlet, “Sorelle”, has always aroused curiosity in visitors and scholars. According to a deep-rooted folk tradition, the construction of the church was not the result of central ecclesiastical funding, but of the devotion and generosity of two sisters of the contrada.

It is believed that these women belonged to the wealthy Paolini family, a historically important lineage in the social fabric of Casalvieri. The act of founding the church by the two women is said to have affected the collective imagination so profoundly that it gave its name to the entire village. Even today, visiting Sorelle means immersing oneself in an atmosphere where the link between family identity and sacred architecture is palpable.

Traditions and Folklore: St James' Fair

For centuries, the Church of St James has not only been a place of worship, but also the economic engine of the hamlet. Every year, the 25 July, During the liturgical feast of the saint, the surroundings of the church were transformed into a lively open-air market.

The Importance of the Agricultural Fair

La St James' Fair was one of the most eagerly awaited events for the rural economy of Ciociaria:

  • Livestock trade: Breeders and merchants came from all over the Comino Valley to buy and sell cattle.
  • Agricultural Products: It was an ideal opportunity to exchange seeds, work tools and the fruits of the summer harvests.
  • Sociality: The religious festival and the commercial fair created a fundamental moment of aggregation for the local populations, uniting devotion to the patron saint with the needs of rural life.
