Medieval Tower of San Donato Val di Comino

The Tower of the Counts of Aquino: The “Stone Sentinel” of San Donato Val di Comino

Standing at the highest point of the village, on a rocky outcrop that defies the void: this is the promise of the Medieval Tower of San Donato Val di Comino (Frosinone). The undisputed symbol of the town, the tower offers visitors a unique visual experience, providing a spectacular view that embraces the entire Comino Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Defensive Architecture: An Impregnable Fortress

Built in 13th century, at a time when the belligerent Earls of Aquinas became feudal lords of San Donato, the tower was built for a purely military purpose. Unlike the common dwellings, it stands outside the fortified core (Castrum Sancti Donati), isolated like a lone giant defending the castle's notable.

Its structure is a masterpiece of medieval defensive engineering:

  • Dimensions: A square plan of 5.40 x 5.40 metres, with a current height of 12 metres (it was originally higher and crowned with battlements).
  • The Impossible Access: There are no doors on the ground floor. The only entrance was located at about 7 metres high (on the south side), accessible only by ladders or ropes that were withdrawn in case of danger. Still visible today is the trace of the right jamb of this opening and the discontinuity in the masonry, a sign of an ancient impenetrable security system.

A Stone Compass: Astronomy and Strategy

The Tower was not only an instrument of war to control the Via Marsicana and the pass of Maple Fork, crucial routes to Abruzzo. It conceals a scientific soul.

Built with a precise orientation based on solar declinations, the tower still serves today as a astronomical compass:

  1. It perfectly indicates the four cardinal points.
  2. It marks the position of the Sun during Equinoxes and the Solstices.
  3. It is aligned in the direction of the sacred Abbey of Monte Cassino, creating an invisible link between temporal and spiritual power.

The Mystery: Legend of the Dragon

Like any self-respecting castle, the Conti d'Aquino Tower is shrouded in mystery. An old popular legend tells of the existence of a underground burrow secret that connected the base of the tower directly to the crypt of the Sanctuary of San Donato.

Guarding this hidden passage, according to tales handed down by the elders, was a fearsome dragon, placed to defend the secrets and treasures of the feudal lords.
