Casalvieri, the tradition of Maria S.S. delle Rose

Our Lady of the Roses: The Roselli Shrine in Casalvieri

The Shrine of Our Lady of the Roses, situated in the picturesque hamlet of Roselli in Casalvieri, is one of the most deeply felt and fascinating centres of devotion in the Comino Valley. This place of silence and prayer harbours a centuries-old history that weaves together faith, miracles and folk traditions deeply rooted in the heart of the Ciociaria region.

The Legend of the Miracle: The Vision in the Rose Garden

According to local tradition, which is very dear to the inhabitants of Casalvieri and the neighbouring towns, the origin of the cult is linked to a miraculous event. It is said that a a girl who has been mute since birth He was tending his flock in this area when, suddenly, he had a vision of the Virgin Mary right in the middle of a lush wild rose garden.

The miracle was instantaneous: at that very moment, the young woman began to speak, managing to recount with great clarity the extraordinary event she had witnessed. News of the miracle spread rapidly, instantly transforming the village of Roselli into a pilgrimage destination for the faithful throughout the Comino Valley and the surrounding areas.

From the “Cappelluccia” to the 17th-century sanctuary

The emotion aroused by the miracle led to the decision to honour the Virgin by building the first place of worship. Seventeenth-century chronicles describe this original structure as a “cappelluccia” small in size, capable of accommodating only a few people at a time.

Inside this small building was housed a very special sacred image: the The Virgin and Child, who was holding a small rose, affectionately known as “rosello”. This iconographic detail was chosen precisely to serve as a lasting reminder of the rose garden where the divine manifestation had taken place.

The ever-increasing influx of pilgrims made it necessary to expand the building. And so, during the 17th century, around the original “cappelluccia”, the present-day church was built, which still welcomes visitors and worshippers today with its understated elegance.
